The 2016 Jeep Cherokee shakes things up considerably in the SUV market. Not only does it offer a fresh, modern face, the vehicle also performs well both on and off the pavement, making it a real standout. Car shoppers should be pleased to find that the interior is well-appointed with quite a few conveniences and comfortable designs. For 2016, Jeep makes four trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and Limited.

Two engines are available for the 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The first, which is standard for all four trim levels, is a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder, which produces 184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. Available for all but the Cherokee Sport is a 3.2-liter V-6, which pumps out 271 horsepower and 239 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard on all but the Trailhawk, which only can be had with four-wheel drive. Trailhawk models also come with a locking rear differential, which makes it more worthy of tackling tough off-road terrain. A nine-speed automatic transmission comes standard with either one of the engines. With the 2.4-liter engine, plus front-wheel drive and the 9-speed transmission, the Cherokee achieves 23 mpg in the city, 29 highway and 25 combined.*

When it comes to safety equipment, all trims are loaded with stability/traction control, antilock disc brakes and airbags covering the front and sides of the passenger area. A rearview camera comes standard on all but the Sport. Buyers can add some optional safety equipment to the Trailhawk and limited trims, including as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning

Among the standard features on 2016 Jeep Cherokee Sport models are 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, an SD card reader, six audio speakers and remote keyless entry. Drivers also enjoy a ParkSense parking assist system, making it easier to get into and out of spots with hitting other cars or other objects.

Several upgrades come with the Latitude trim, including a power sunroof over the front row, a fixed glass sunroof over the second row, 17-inch silver aluminum wheels, front fog lights and a navigation system with voice controls

The Trailhawk is geared more toward off-roading enthusiasts, which is why it features 17-inch wheels that are a little wider than on the other trims, plus all-terrain wheels, skid plates, an off-road tuned suspension and tow hooks. The interior is also loaded with some nice amenities, such as cooled front seats, a larger gauge cluster, an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and satellite radio

The top-of-the-line 2016 JeepCherokee Limited does not have the off-road gear from the Trailhawk, but does ride on 18-inch polished aluminum wheels. It also comes with an automatic dual-zone climate control system, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror and remote ignition
